There has been recent public discussion about acetaminophen (Tylenol) and autism. Some studies have suggested a possible association, but observational studies show correlation, not causation. When we look at all the highest quality research together, scientists have not concluded that using Tylenol in pregnancy causes autism. We are closely monitoring the advice of credible medical bodies in Canada, including the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada, which continues to recommend acetaminophen as safe when medically indicated. Families and pregnant women should continue to follow the advice of their healthcare providers. Our focus must remain on ensuring autistic people are supported, respected, and included.
